It’s an honour to have Adite Banerjie, writer par excellence on I Luv Fiction today. Let’s know something about her new book published by Harper Collins and future projects.
ILF: Tell us about the inspiration behind ‘No Safe Zone’.
AB: No Safe Zone was supposed to be a screenplay. But it didn’t quite work out. The original story was about a woman who had been adopted through an illegal adoption agency and the travails she faces. I stopped writing it after a while as I wasn’t quite happy with the way it was shaping up. But the subject of adoptions and women’s trafficking was too compelling. So I decided to rework the story and write it like a romantic-thriller. There was one particular story which I had read—about baby bazars—that reignited the spark. As soon as I came across that news item I knew I had to use that aspect in my story and build the suspense around that. That’s how NSZ took its current shape.
ILF: What was the hardest part to tackle, if any, during the writing phase of ‘No Safe Zone’?
AB: Working out the balance between romance and suspense was the most difficult part of writing NSZ. Too much romance and the plot would fizzle out. While too many thrills and it wouldn’t quite fit into the romance genre.
ILF: What is your least favorite part of the publishing/ writing process?
AB: I guess it has to be marketing. But having said that, I think the marketing beast is not as terrifying as it used to be when I had started out! LOL. I enjoy interacting with readers about my book. And even social media marketing is becoming less of a chore. Or perhaps, I am just addicted to social media. ☺
ILF: What’s the one thing about you that might surprise readers?
AB: It takes a hell of a long time for me to actually start writing. I put off writing the first chapter for as long as I can. And if given a chance I will procrastinate forever. But once I have started writing and the words begin to pile up, I can’t keep away from the work in progress!
ILF: Any future writing projects in the works? If so, tell us about it, and any important dates to go with it.
AB: I am currently working on a screenplay and a novella simultaneously. Here is a short excerpt from the romance novella.
‘Tony let himself bask in the afterglow of a hard won victory. Driving through the overcrowded streets, he couldn’t help but reflect at how life had changed in the past four years. Many of his childhood friends who had grown up with him in the back alleys of Bandra, would be shocked to see him in his new three-piece-suit avatar. For them, Tony had always been the guy who wore grubby vests and shorts, soccer shoes and had a ball at his feet. On weekends the soccer ball would be replaced by a guitar. Strains of music would be heard all over the little neighbourhood, an open invitation for one and all to descend at his place for some hot vindaloo curry that Nana would lovingly dish out and a day long jam session.’
